The Altar Canopy
According to liturgical tradition and rubrics the structure of an altar is not complete unless it be surmounted by a canopy. It should cover the altar and footpace. There are different types. A ciborium (civory) has columns with a roof over the altar. A baldachin or tester is for smaller spaces framed by metal or wood which hangs silk, brocade or other rich fabrics of the liturgical color of the day or just white or red.
